Additional Comments:  "There was relatively little smoking in the film, with Rod Steiger accounting for over half of the smoking scenes.  There was an interesting subtext to the film, as tobacco was associated with the upper class; once the Bolshevik Revolution took place, tobacco became much less available, with several members of the privileged class complaining about its scarcity.  There was also a great scene in which Doctor Zhivago, caring for an injured character, tells him 'You shouldn't smoke... you've had a shock'."
