Dr. Barry Hummel posted the following additional comments:

"After Superman II, the quality of this film series took a significant dive.  Superman III is a really bad movie.  The plot involves an industrialist, Ross Webster (Robert Vaughn), who wants to control the world by using computers.  He hires Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a down-on-his-luck computer genius to do most of the dirty work.

Naturally, the only thing that stands in the way of Webtser's world domination is Superman.  So, Webster hatches a carzy plan to kill the Man of Steel:  he has Gus track down the ingredients of kryptonite so that they can create it in a laboratory:

This is another great example of product placement, (though not as obvious as those scenes of the Marlboro truck in Superman II).  Notice that Gus picks up a pack of Camel cigarettes, which gives him the idea to replace the 'unknown' ingredient with 'tar'.

As you can guess, the added ingredient creates a mutant-form of kryptonite, which doesn't kill Superman.  Instead it splits him into two parts...good and evil twins.  Mayhem ensues.  Good triumphs over evil.  Gus finds redemption.  Webtser goes to jail.  And the movie makes enough money to allow producers to make another bad sequel, Superman IV:  The Quest for Peace."
