Additional comments: Dr. Barry Hummel, "This is epic filmmaking at its best! But why, on a distant planet in the future, does Sigourney Weaver's character need to be shown using tobacco?"; Melanie B., "Tobacco was used to show the stress of one of the main actors. It was used to make the woman look more powerful, domineering."

Distributor: 20th Century Fox
The film was reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel on 12/20/2007.
Dr. Hummel posted the following additional comments:
"The original Star Wars trilogy (now known as Episodes IV-VI) had many scenes of smoking, exclusively in the form of hookahs or water pipes.
In this scene from the original 1977 film, the smoke-filled cantina includes two characters using hookahs. See if you can spot them:
You can actually hear this alien as he sucks air through a waterpipe:
The other alien actually has a name: Dannik Jerriko. In the original Star Wars script, Dannik was simply an extra known as “pipe smoking alien” whose table is disturbed when Pando Baba gets his arm severed by Obi-Wan:
Dannik Jerriko was later featured in his own short story titled Soup’s On: The Pipe Smoker’s Tale from the book Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina published in 1995. He even has his own action figure, where he carried around his hookah pipe on his belt!
Does George Lucas regret populating his space-age saga with old-school tobacco? For a possible admission of guilt, see the blog on The Attack of the Clones." Or, better still, check out this bizarre PSA:

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

SmokeScreeners review:
Year of Release: 1982
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Steven Spielberg
Distrubutor: Universal Studios
Film reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel on 1/29/2008.
Dr. Hummel posted the following comments:
"Let's take a look at two scenes that occur early in the 1982 film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. The two scenes have little to do with the focus of the movie, but seem to exist to explore the relationship between Elliott (Henry Thomas), and his older brother, Michael (Robert MacNaughton).
First, watch this scene:
Here we see five teenage boys playing a game. Clouds of smoke are seen rising from the table, though we do not actually see any of the boys smoking. We also see boys drinking from cans; it is impossible to tell whether they are drinking soda or beer. The only other person in the room is Elliott. You can see that he wants to be a part of the group; of course, the older boys are dangling his participation in the game like a carrot on a stick. But think about it: this young boy wants to be part of this group of older boys, and he appears to be willing to do anything for that privilege. Might that include smoking or drinking?
You will also notice that there is no adult supervision while all of this is taking place. That changes in this follow-up scene:
Now we see the mother (Dee Wallace) in the room. Notice that the smoke has disappeared. Clearly the older boys knew they were doing something that Mom would NOT be happy about. If you think that is reading too much into it, notice the two cans of air freshener on the table. Why else would the cans be there except to mask the odor of the tobacco or marijuana before Mom entered the room?
Scenes like these are subtle, but they underscore the use of tobacco by teenagers as a defiant act. The message is that it is okay to use tobacco, even if your parents do NOt approve... just cover your tracks. The sad part, is that scenes like this also deliver the message that you have to smoke (or drink) to hang out with 'the big boys'."

The film was reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel on 5/20/2007.
Dr. Barry Hummel posted the following additional comments:
"Spider-Man 3 has one incredibly interesting scene of smoking. In this scene, Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) is competing for his free-lance job with Eddie Brock (Topher Grace). Both men are trying to persuade their boss, J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) that they are the right man for the job. Watch what happens:
So the big boss is smoking in his office, and the heck with anybody who wants to say anything about it!
The problem is, the Spider-Man films take place in New York City. By 2007, the year in which Spider-Man 3 was released, New York had passed a ban on smoking in the workplace. So, techinically Mr. Jameson is breaking the law himself even as he pleads for his staff to "catch Spider-Man in the act."
So, the question is, which of these people are going to say something to Mr. Jameson? Do you think it will be one of two guys fighting for a full-time job? You can alsmost bet that the guy who says something will be the guy who is not hired. Maybe Mr. Jameson's secretary will tell him to stop? Not likely, given that he dismissed her with a wave. How about the guy who pops in and announces that he really cares what Mr. Jameson wants before being told to 'shut up' and 'get out'. No, I suspect Mr. Jameson will simply continue to flaunt the law at the expense of the health of his staff."

In this scene, we see Mac light up a cigar as he tails Indy and Mutt as they begin their search for The Crystal Skull:
The cigar actually draws attention to the character so that the viewer will take a careful look at hime and identify him. Later on, Mac blows a little smoke Indy's way as he explains why he is turning his coat so frequently:
As I always try to point out, the tobacco use adds nothing to the character or the story. We don't need the cigar to tell us that Mac is a morally bankrupt human being."

"There is an interesting scene early in this film that seems to make an odd reference to tobacco. Obi-Wan Kenobi tails an assassin into a nightclub where he has the following odd encounter:
Our alien friend is pushing something called 'death sticks', which look exactly like cigarettes.
I wonder if George Lucas is having regrets given the extensive presence of hookah pipes throughout the original Star Wars trilogy. The action figures marketed to children even came with their own water pipes...
Is he trying to recant the glorification of smoking in his earlier films? It wouldn't be the only history that he attempted to revise in his prequels... just what the heck are Midi-chlorians, and why do we need a scientific explanation of The Force? Too much hero-worship, George?"

Dr. Hummel wrote the following comments:
"I wanted to focus on an interesting transition during the Sci-Fi movie Independence Day (1996).
In this early scene from the movie, David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) gives his father (Judd Hirsch) a lecture about smoking cigars:
Much later in the movie, Levinson has flown into the heart of an alien ship with Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) to plant a computer virus designed to bring down the alien fleet. Things are looking grim, so the two heroes do the obvious: they share a cigar!
The message is loud and clear. Despite a lifetime of clean, healthy living, Levinson decides to light up now that it looks as if his life is about to end. On the surface, this seems harmless enough. But why on earth (or in space) would a cigar be this man's dying wish?
Of course, Levinson has a small problem: he survives! So our two heroes return to earth, cigars in hand:
Captain Hiller is kind enough to smoke around both his fiancee and her young son. Meanwhile, Levinson's father notices his cigar and asks, 'So this is healthy?'
'No,' Levinson replies, 'but I could get used to it.'
Used to it or addicted to it? Or, are they really the same thing?"

Film reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel on 11/10/2007
Dr. Hummel posted the following additional comments:
"In the classic Steven Spielberg film Jaws (1975), there were plenty of smoking scenes. Here are a few scenes that I think are the most important.
Almost everyone remembers the scene in which Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) reviews the autopsy results of the first victim. Here is a clip from that scene:
What I find interesting about this is Hooper's reaction. He is not afraid to stop Brody from smoking in this work environment. This was not a common sentiment in 1975, when this film was produced. In fact, it would be another 20+ years before true reform began to occur to reduce workplace exposure to secondhand smoke.
Now look at this scene, in which Brody (Roy Scheider) confronts the Mayor of Amity (Murray Hamilton) in a local hospital after one of the shark attacks:
A very nervous Mayor Vaughn struggles with a decision that will impact his political future; in the midst of this struggle, he turns to an old friend: tobacco. He is going to have his "smoke" despite the fact that he is in an emergency room full of patients. Where is Matt Hooper when we need him?
Finally, I had to toss in this classic scene:
This is one of the most recognizable scenes from the film. It is, after all, the very first time we see the open jaws of the great white shark popping out of the water. Call me silly, but is that cigarette really necessary?
By the way, in 2004 there were 7 deaths from shark attacks worldwide. In contrast, worldwide tobacco deaths are roughly 5,000,000 each year. The great irony is that the Brody's of the world are more likely to die as a result of smoking than because of a great white shark attack!"

This film was reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel of 5/9/2009.
Dr. Hummel posted the following additional comments: "One of the marketing tools for this film is 'It's not your father's Star Trek'. It turns out that it doesn't have to be. Using a complicated plot to drive a great action fillm, J.J. Abrams has simultaneously rooted his film deeply in the past and changed the future.
Think about it. This is the ultimate reboot of the entire Star Trek universe. He has created a parallel time line. Nothing that has occured in the past (at least as far as 4 out of 5 television series and all 10 previous films are concerned) can or will happen again. Much like the Vulcan High Council of the eradicated planet has become the caretakers of the Vulcan history and culture, Spock has become the caretaker of the original Star Trek history and culture.
This frees the caretakers of the franchise to boldly go in a new direction without being obligated to tell stories that fit into the complicated (or should I say bloated) universe that existed before. That might be the biggest stroke of genius of all."

The film was reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel on 11/7/2007.
Dr. Hummel posted the following additional discussion:
"In Tim Burton's Batman, most of the smoking scenes are in the background, especially in bars and the newspaper office.
Unfortunately, three prominent characters smoked during the film: Harvey Dent (Billy Dee Williams), the Mayor (Lee Wallace), and Detective Eckhardt (William Hootkins).
The corrupt Detective Eckhardt can be seen smoking a cigar early in the film when he is confronted by reporter Alexander Knox (Robert Wuhl):
More importantly, District Attorney Harvey Dent (Billy Dee Williams) is seen smoking cigars on several occasions. One time, Dent is one of several characters seen smoking at a fund-raiser at Wayne Manor:
Another time, Dent is seen smoking in his office while trying to track down the Joker:
One positive note: The director did was able to make the Joker look quite villainous without resorting to tobacco use... a trend continued by Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight."

Dr. Hummel posted the following additional comments:
"Men in Black is a funny, clever film. The basic premise is that aliens have been hiding among us and living on earth undercover. In order to keep the peace, the Men in Black were created as a secret police force. They monitor the activities of the aliens to make sure that they behave themselves.
Most of the aliens have assimilated quite nicely. During the movie, however, there is a crisis in which an alien species decides the time has come to destroy the earth. The Men in Black are trying to avert the crisis, but many of the aliens living on earth seem to have lost confidence in the group and began a mass evacuation. The following scene takes place as aliens of all shapes and sizes are scrambling to get off the planet before it is reduced to space dust; click here to view the clip on Facebook
If you look carefully at these 'sorry little ingrates', you will notice that they are trying to take a cart-full of cartons of Marlboro cigarettes!
Think about it. These space worms have determined that the one thing that they cannot live without if the Earth is destroyed is cigarettes. Now that is an addiction...
By the way, this sort of tobacco product placement was supposed to end with the Master Settlement Agreement bewteen the major tobacco companies and the states' attorney generals in 1998. So, why do these same worms smoke the same brand in Men in Black II?"

In this film 8 smoking incidents occured, 6 of which were inside and 2 of which were outside.
The film was reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel on 1/11/2008.
Dr. Barry Hummel posted the following additional comments:
"Raiders of the Lost Ark is a fabulous film. Set during the rise of the Nazis during the 1930's, the film tells the story of an academic archeologist, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) as he races to beat Nazis to a religious relic, the Lost Ark of the Covenant.
Fortunately, we never see Dr. Jones using tobacco. Sadly, the same cannot be said for his love interest, Marion Ravenwood. The following scene takes place early in the film, when the villains arrive at Marion's business to try and track down a pendant that will lead them to the resting place of the Lost Ark:
Notice how Marion uses the cigarette as a symbol of power. She dangles the cigarette in her lips as she speaks to the Nazi, a sign of disrespect. As he draws closer, she blows smoke in his face... using the smoke as a weapon to try back him off. He coughs, but holds his ground, at which point she turns to leave. Could it be that she is actually nervous underneath that tough image that she is trying to convey with that cigarette?
After this encounter, Marion decides to help Dr. Jones. She gives him the pendant, and accompanies him to Cairo to search for the Lost Ark. In Cairo, Marion is abducted, but in the confusion Dr. Jones thinks that Marion has actually been killed. To console himself, Indy heads to a local bar to drown his sorrow in a bottle of whiskey. But this is not your typical bar:
Indiana Jones has stgepped into a hookah bar! Technically, it may have been accurate to put the character in a hookah bar in a city like Cairo in the 1930's. But, is it really necessary? Does the tobacco use really add anything to the scene? It becomes even more disturbing when you realize that Indy's friend, Sallah, sends a group of children into the smoke-filled bar to rescue him from the danger.
I would never argue the accuracy of such a scene. I would, however, dispute the necessity of including it. Hookah use in the middle east in the 1930's may have been commonplace, but children and adults watching a classic film like Raiders of the Lost Ark rarely discuss the historical context of such tobacco use. It just adds to the false perception that tobacco use is normal... and that the majority of Americans use tobacco.
If you doubt that scenes like this have an impact, you should read up on the rise of hookah use in the United States in recent years."

Dr. Barry Hummel posted the following additional comments:
"Ghost Busters is a classic comedy in which three down-and-out college professors develop a system for ridding the world of evil spirits. Too bad that they couldn't find a way to rid the world of secondhand smoke!
Take this scene. You will notice the no-smoking scene in the elevator. Too bad the courtesy does not extend to other areas of the hotel...
I wonder if Dr. Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) bothered to pick up the cigarette that fell from his lips? Or did he just let it smolder on the carpet creating a fire hazard?
As the film progresses, the Ghost Busters become the talk of the town. Check out this cameo by radio and television personality Larry King, smoking in his studio during a live broadcast...
So, the ghost-busting business continues to grow, and the time has come to hire a new employee. In this scene, Dr. Stantz and Dr. Venkman return from a job shortly after the arrival of a potential employee, Winston Zeddmore (Ernie Hudson). Check out the great first impression that Stantz and Venkman make on Mr. Zeddmore!
It is hard to believe there was a time where workplace smoking was universal. Over half of the states in the USA, including New York where the movie Ghost Busters takes place, now have some kind of smoke-free workplace legislation.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) now classifies secondhand smoke as a Group A carcinogen... the highest possible classification. So, on top of the verbal abuse that the office manager, Janine (Annie Potts), has to suffer at the hands of Dr. Venkman, she is also suffering a form of physical abuse due to second hand smoke. In 1984, the EPA may have stopped by the check on the nuclear equipment used to contain the ghosts captured by our heroes. In 2008, they might also stop by to fine the Ghost Busters for violations of the smoke-free workplace laws on the books in New York!
Do possible safety violations and a crackdown by the EPA have our heroes worried? Not on your life!
While we have come along way in protecting non-smokers in work environments, some of the worst secondhand smoke exposure occurs in a much tighter environment... vehicles.
Because vehicles are smaller, non-smokers are exposed to higher concentrations of the carcinogens found in secondhand smoke. Non-smokers actually smoke the equivalent of 3 cigarettes for every hour that they spend in a car with a smoker! Some states are beginning to pass legislation regulating vehicle smoking, especially where children are involved.
By the end opf the movie, our heroes have cleaned up New York, ridding the city of all its paranormal activity. With nothing left to do, perhaps they should tackle a more relevant problem.
Smoke Busters, anyone?"
